Filings of EU Trade Mark and EU Design applications by UK applicants have recently fallen for the first time since the economic crisis of 2008-2009.
The number of EU Trade Mark applications filed by UK applicants in 2016 fell 7% to 11,643 from 12,514 in 2015. The decline was across the sectors: fashion (-13%), financial services (-11%), food and drink (-8.5%) and pharmaceuticals & healthcare (-7%). EU registered design applications by UK applicants fell 2%. August 2016 also saw a 30% uplift of national UK trade mark & design applications compared to August 2015.
This could mean that UK businesses are reflecting on the implications of Brexit. UK businesses may no longer believe the EU is the best export market for them because other countries offer more attractive export opportunities or because they are concentrating on their home market.
