Nike was recently granted a patent for a smart running shoe that contains a wireless vitals tracking system embedded into a shoe to track biometrics data in real-time including heart rate, blood pressure and energy used. The vital monitoring technology is not new – many people now have a “fitbit” or other device that can monitor vital signs but many (some sources claim up to half) are no longer used by consumers as they are often forgotten when the physical activity that needs tracking commences. That is the unique advantage of Nike’s smart sports shoes – you would often have them on before you commenced any physical activity.
