It was in Donald Trump’s first press conference as President-elect in January 2017 that the term “fake news” grew as a mainstream term after Donald Trump pointed at a CNN news reporter and said “You are fake news!” in the middle of his question to the President-elect.
Now three US companies are trying to trademark the term “fake news” at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for use in various trade mark entertainment and clothing classes.
- Film Roman, the team of animators that sketched “The Simpsons”, is applying for a trade mark for “Fake News” for use on an adult cartoon comedy TV show.
- AdMagic and Breaking Games, the company that manufactures the adult party board game Cards Against Humanity, has applied for a trade mark for “Fake News” for use on board games or card games.
- The last company has applied a trade mark for “Fake News” for use on T-shirts and other clothing items
The USPTO will need to decide whether “fake news” is worthy of tradmarking and if so it may take about 2 years for the trade mark to be issued.
