Microsoft was recently granted a US patent application for real-time monitoring technology of internet usage (US patent 20170055200). The system moves beyond traditional parental internet security measures of banning certain websites or imposing time restrictions on access to websites. This new patented technology allows a designated admin profile to view messages sent, provides explicit content notifications and blocks certain media before delivery all in real time.
Children’s access to tablets and smartphones is becoming more popular from an early age so their access to internet content is increasing. It is hard to monitor child’s internet usage on these devices because they are mobile so they will frequently be using the technology out of parental eyesight. Microsoft’s newly patented technology could therefore be useful in controlling children’s internet usage.
The technology could also be used by employers wanting to keep an eye on the productivity of employees in the workplace by monitoring their internet usage.
