Dawn Ellmore Salary Guide 2020: Good news for IP professionals

Dawn Ellmore Employment - Salary Guide 2020

The latest salary research for the whole of the Intellectual Property profession in the UK, conducted by Dawn Ellmore Employment, has been released. It shows good news for workers across the Intellectual Property sector, with steady increases in basic salaries for fee earners and support staff alike, with the growth in the London market being replicated in the regions.

Patent Attorneys, Trade Mark Attorneys and Intellectual Property Solicitors

Salaries for Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys were found to have increased slightly across the board when compared to the 2019 figures. We found that Part Qualified Patent Attorneys could gain a salary up to £40,000 even before they have passed the Post Graduate IP Certificate or foundation level examinations, as employers put even more of a premium on their technical expertise. We also noted that Newly Qualified Trade Mark Attorneys could now earn up to £60,000 as they start to embark upon their post qualification career.

Salaries for Intellectual Property Solicitor didn’t show any particular increases in terms of the ranges displayed in our Guide, although there was some upward movement with individual salaries within the ranges shown – and salaries within this area of specialism remain very attractive.

Intellectual Property Support Staff

The salary ranges for paralegal, administration and secretarial staff, working in both patents and trade marks, showed a steady progression, both in London and for those working regionally. Particular increases are seen at highly experienced and management levels, and Patent and Trade Mark Paralegals can now break the £50,000 barrier in London.

Office Juniors working in both London and regionally can now earn £20,000 at entry level, whilst salaries for HR staff remain highly attractive within the Intellectual Property profession.

Technical Support Staff

Patent Searchers and Patent Analyst salaries have shown a steady increase on the 2019 figures, with experienced staff able to earn in excess of £50,000 in London and £40,000 if working regionally. The pay levels for Intellectual Property Managers have displayed a similar progression, and those with over 8 years’ experience in IP Management capable of earning at least £50,000 in London and £45,000 regionally.

Accounts Staff

The trend of increasing salaries is less pronounced for those working in accounts, billing and credit control within the Intellectual Property sector, although there is evidence of increases within the salary bandings we have reported. Intellectual Property remains a healthy sector in which to work, with workers at management level in particular earning generous compensation for their efforts.
