10 April: Dawn Ellmore reviews recent UK patent applications with the EPO

We looked at the European Patent Office’s Annual Report for 2017 to analyse how numbers have changed. The number of UK patent applications increased by 2.4% last year, up from 5,188 in 2016.

It’s the fourth annual rise in a row for UK patent applications, and matches the upward trajectory of general European applications, which is at 2.6%. Patents granted to UK businesses by the EPO also increased by 6.3%.

We took a fascinating glimpse into the digitisation of Intellectual Property specifically within the oil and gas industry. With the energy sector facing several challenges, including climate change, lack of supply and an increasing population, innovation is increasing all the time.

This obviously affects IP and rights ownership, particularly when multiple businesses are innovating together. Protecting digital IP has never been more important for businesses.

17 April: Dawn Ellmore looks at the trade mark battle for the Queen’s image

Recently, Royal Mail took steps to trade mark the iconic and instantly recognisable ‘Queen’s head’ design that has been used on stamps for decades. The Queen was reportedly not impressed, and the move was blocked by Buckingham Palace.

In this blog we look at reasons why Royal Mail made this application and why they were denied.

19 April: Dawn Ellmore looks at Amazon’s patent application for AI voice recording

Delving into the patent applications for major companies such as Amazon, Facebook and Google always opens the door to a fascinating world of innovation and futuristic design.

In this post we look at a patent application Amazon made in 2017 for its smart assistant (known as Alexa). The technology would record customers’ conversation and use the data to target specific products and services. This tailored advertising would improve customers’ lives, according to the application.
